Methods to Display Shortcut Keys in ScreenTips in Microsoft Office

ScreenTips are small popup windows that display once you hover your mouse over a button, or command, on the ribbon. They offer a brief hint indicating what that button does, and may contain the shortcut key for that command.

Notice the 2 ScreenTips within the image above. One displays the shortcut used to make text bold, one doesn’t. These shortcut keys within the ScreenTips are normally on by default. However, for those who don’t see them and wish to turn them on, we’ll show you ways.

To start, open Word, Excel, or Publisher and click on the “File” tab. We’re using Word in our example, but turning on the ScreenTips in one in all these programs also affects Excel and Publisher. Outlook can also be affected by this alteration, but you’ll be able to’t make the change in Outlook.

On the backstage screen, click “Options” within the list of things on the left.

On the “Word Options” dialog box, click “Advanced” within the list of things on the left.

Scroll right down to the “Display” section and choose the “Show shortcut keys in ScreenTips” check box so there’s a check mark within the box.

Click “OK” to simply accept the change and shut the “Word Options” dialog box.

Now, once you hover your mouse over a button on the ribbon, the shortcut key for that command displays within the ScreenTip.

This procedure applies to the ScreenTips which can be built into Office. You can too create your personal custom ScreenTips that display once you hover your mouse over a word, a phrase, or a picture.
